Rugged PC Workstation Overview
In certain field applications, it is impractical to transport or carry around a full-sized computer system. To respond to this particular need, Chassis Plans created a series of Rugged Industrial PC Workstations, also known as Portable Computers, Portable PC Computers, LunchBox Computers, or Luggable Computers.

These Industrial Workstations have full PC functionality with all the necessary processing power, memory, plug-ins, and expansion cards installed. As an example, our MP3X17 model offers three 17-inch 1280x1024 LCD flat panels and can accommodate an ATX motherboard, allowing up to seven expansion card slots.

These portable and rugged workstation systems are ideal for various field-based, mission critical, and computing-intensive applications such as digital computer forensics, UAV flight control systems, remote GIS and mapping, or flight line data acquisition, analysis and control.

Custom Portable Test Area Workstation
Custom Portable ComputerA certain defense contractor required a portable computer system which needed to be both extremely durable and and yet lightweight. In their words, the rugged workstation needed “to survive the trauma of repeated shipping to the four corners of the earth.” They had approached other companies with these specifications in mind, but so far, none have been able to deliver a product that was satisfactory.

Chassis Plans rose to the challenge and designed a unit to meet the contractor’s titanic expectations. It was not an easy task, but they had come up with an innovative rugged workstation design sporting an aluminum alloy construction, shock mounted drive bays, I/O card retention mechanisms, a water-resistant keyboard and touchpad, and Chassis Plans’ proprietary SysCool® system fan management board to control fan noise and alarm the user in case the system’s thermal levels were beyond acceptable limits, or if the fans fail.

The system was also equipped with a 17-inch high resolution widescreen display, and the dedicated graphics processor on the TSB System Host board made it suitable for their mobile testing labs. The suite of cards that they needed on the system required the use of a BPX5 passive backplane (2x8 and 2x4 PCIe slots) with a TSB Sandy Bridge System Host Board providing a 3.4 GHz Intel XEON processor, offering the necessary processing power for this unique configuration.

This custom solution is available via special order only. There is a required minimum unit quantity to be ordered for this particular configuration.

Custom Rugged Forensic Computer System w/ UPS for the FBI
The Federal Bureau of Investigation issued a challenge to Chassis Plans by commissioning them to design and build a very compact yet extremely powerful portable server for use with their forensic computing operations.

Rugged FBI Portable Computer System Rear ViewThese rugged workstations were to be used in an information-sensitive, investigatory capacity. The FBI also required a built-in uninterruptible power supply (UPS) to facilitate a controlled shutdown in the event of a power blackout, to protect against data loss or corruption.

The systems were to be used in a wide variety of climates and environmental conditions, so they needed to have superior system cooling and air filtration (to prevent dust to enter the chassis) capabilities. A customized card retention mechanism was added to secure the plug-in cards and protect them against damage caused by strong vibration and shock. Also included was Chassis Plans’ proprietary SysCool® system fan management board to control fan noise and alarm the user in case the system’s thermal levels were beyond acceptable limits, or if the fans fail.

This custom solution is available via special order only. There is a required minimum unit quantity to be ordered for this particular configuration.
